First of all, you have to understand that volunteering is a trip, with another purpose, but a trip at the end of the day, with all the expenses that entails. We are surprised that we are giving away our effort and time in a totally selfless way, and for a good cause, and on top of that we have to pay.
Keep in mind that although they vary from higher to lower prices, the amounts that the NGOs demand are to cover your expenses for accommodation, food, etc. Other NGOs may also add a symbolic amount as a donation to the organization.
Most organizations are small, rely on donations from people like you, the kind of projects you will be part of and usually lack staff, and cannot afford to pay you.
Remember that your share is as important as your effort or time, many times they are necessary for the financing of the project.
Money management
However, if your concern is due to the possibility that your money is not being properly managed, resolve your doubts; talk to the NGO and ask them directly, or contact other volunteers.
Here are a few tips that can help you with the problem that is often money in volunteering:
- Prepare a budget.
- From the money you can receive per month (salary, pay, etc.), set an amount that you can save.
- Make a commitment.
- Review your expenses and select those you can do without for a few months.
If you are really interested in volunteering, keep in mind that there are no obstacles other than the ones you put up. Are you prepared for this unforgettable journey?
